Overview

There's a lake hidden in the upper reaches of Shounter Valley that people struggle to describe once they've seen it — milky turquoise water held in a bowl of rock and snow at 4,100 metres (13,500 ft), with Mount Harri Parbat rising behind it like a wall. This is Chitta Katha Lake, and TourRangers has been taking trekkers there for years.
Chitta Katha (meaning "White Stream" in the regional language) is an alpine lake in Azad Kashmir, fed by the Chitta Katha stream flowing down from Harri Parbat — a mountain that holds deep significance in Hindu tradition, where it is associated with Lord Shiva and the eternal sanctuary of Kailash. The lake sits at a geographic crossroads where Neelum Valley, Naran, and the route to Skardu converge, accessible through Kel and the Shounter Valley by a rough but beautiful jeep track followed by a scenic trek on foot.
Reaching the lake involves a rough shingle jeep track of roughly 20 km from Kel to Domail Bala, followed by a lush green 5 km hiking section. Along the way through the Shounter Valley you'll experience the bewitching beauty and supernatural charm the region is known for. It's a proper mountain experience packed into a long weekend — graded moderate-to-hard, with around 6–7 hours of trekking a day (8–9 km), camping at the Daak Two base camp and beside the turquoise lake under a brilliant sky.
