Overview

Rising to 6,046 metres above the Shigar Valley in Baltistan, Khosar Gang (also written Koser Gunge) is one of the most accessible 6,000-metre peaks in the Karakoram Range. The name means "Pumpkin Glacier" in the Balti language, and it sits on the left bank of the Braldu River, just 45 kilometres from Skardu city — which means less travel time and more climbing time compared to most expeditions in the region.
The route is straightforward: a steep hike through Camp I and Camp II, with a short technical section of 80–120 metres of fixed rope just below the summit and some crevasses to navigate between Camp II and the top. It's not a walk-up, but it doesn't require advanced mountaineering experience either — making it the ideal first 6,000m peak for trekkers stepping into real high-altitude climbing, and a go-to acclimatization peak for professionals training for bigger Karakoram objectives.
TourRangers' Khosar Gang Expedition runs as a compact 7-day, Skardu-to-Skardu itinerary — no wasted travel days, just the climb itself.

For those arriving a day early, this is your chance to settle in and get a head start on acclimatization before the expedition officially begins. Check into the hotel in Skardu (covered in package cost), pick up any last-minute gear from the bazaar, and take an easy afternoon walk up to Kharpocho Fort — the old castle perched above the town with panoramic views of the Indus River and surrounding ranges. It's also a good day to sort out your climbing kit, rest after the journey to Skardu, and meet any fellow climbers who've arrived early. Overnight in hotel, Skardu.

Frequently asked

Everything you might be wondering before you book — tap a question to expand.

This itinerary runs Skardu to Skardu. You arrange your own travel to and from Skardu (flights or road via KKH), and TourRangers handles everything from arrival to departure.

Yes — it's widely regarded as one of the best introductory 6,000m peaks in the Karakoram. You need multi-day trekking fitness and basic familiarity with crampons and ice axe, but no advanced technical climbing is required.

This is one of our tougher trips — long, remote days at altitude. You should be in strong physical condition with prior multi-day trekking experience. We're happy to suggest a training plan so you arrive ready to enjoy it.

The optimal climbing window is July through September, when snow conditions on the upper route are most manageable and weather windows are more frequent. Even within this window, conditions above 5,000m can change rapidly — the itinerary builds in flexibility for weather delays, and your expedition leader makes the final call on summit timing.

This trip reaches 6046m. Every itinerary is deliberately paced with rest and gradual-ascent days so your body adapts safely, and our guides are trained to watch for altitude symptoms and make conservative calls on the mountain. Arrive well-rested and hydrated and the climb is very manageable.

You'll find a full “What to pack” list on this page. Bring sturdy footwear, warm layers for cold mornings, and a daypack — porters or vehicles carry the heavy loads. Don't have a key item like a sleeping bag or down jacket? Let us know in advance and we can arrange quality rentals or point you to the right kit.

The route is a steep hike up to Camp II. Above that, there's a section of 80–120m of fixed rope on steeper terrain and crevasses to navigate. Your guides handle the rope fixing and lead the group safely through.

Summit timing is always weather-dependent. Your expedition leader will adjust the schedule within the available days to find the best window, and makes the final safety call on summit day.

The round trip from Camp II to the summit and back typically takes 8–10 hours, starting well before dawn.

Absolutely.
